Fire consumes rental RV on I-17, near Sunset Point
The sky over the Sunset Point Rest Area filled with black smoke the evening of May 5, as a rented RV burned at the top of the hill.
Black Canyon Fire Chief Tom Birch said a group of four from Sanoita rented the RV to take on a road trip to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.
The occupants said that the RV began running roughly in Phoenix but they decided to continue driving.
When they reached Sunset Point they could see thick black smoke pouring through the floor vents.
Birch said the driver pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and tried to put the fire out with the onboard fire extinguisher to no avail.
The Black Canyon and Mayer Fire Departments learned of the incident at 5:35 p.m., he said, and the Black Canyon crew arrived on the scene 13 minutes later at 5:48 p.m. to find the RV engulfed in flames.
Birch said the fire also spread to the dry brush along I-17 and the 10 firefighters from the BCFD and MFD worked together to extinguish the flames.
The ffires were out and both teams left the scene at 7:50 p.m.
