College Music Department presents final concert of the academic year
PRESCOTT - The Yavapai College Music Department will present the premier performance of an orchestral piece by a local young composer as part of the instrumental concert featuring the symphony orchestra and the symphonic band, both under the direction of Dr. Roy Breiling, at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Yavapai College Performance Hall.
The symphonic band begins the afternoon performance with pieces by Richard Saucedo, Norman Dello Joio, Julius Fucik, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Warren Barker.
After the intermission, the symphony orchestra takes the stage. It will play compositions by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Armas Jarnefelt.
The music department presents 15-year-old violinist Sky Jackson playing the first movement of Edouard Lalo's "Symphonie Espagnole."
The music department also presents the premier performance of new music by local composer Chad Roberts.
Breiling and the YC Orchestra commissioned Roberts to write an original piece. The work, "Whiskey Row," was inspired by a reading of an account of the Great Prescott Fire of 1906, during which, it is said, Whiskey Row bar patrons carried their libations across the street to watch the spectacle.
The final concert of the academic year will conclude with compositions by George Bizet and Leroy Anderson.
Admission to Sunday's concert is $5, free for children 14 and under.
People can get tickets through the YC Art Gallery or by calling 776-2031.
The Performance Hall is at 1100 E. Sheldon in Prescott.
