Don't leave home without your pets

It is the time of year when Yavapai County residents are reminded of the threat of wild fires. Area families should be prepared to evacuate quickly and need to take along all pets.

Emergency preparedness means being ready to evacuate within one hour. Anyone needing to evacuate should take their animals, large and small, with them.

"Don't Leave Home Without Them" is the message ADS stresses. Many residents are under the belief that emergency personnel will evacuate animals left behind. This is not true and it may not be possible in a natural disaster for anyone to return to homes in threatened areas.

ADS creates and maintains a shelter for animals whenever there is an evacuation in Yavapai County. The volunteer group coordinates with Emergency Management Services of Yavapai County.

Information concerning the locations of emergency animal shelters is given on local radio and television stations.

Shelters are usually set up near Red Cross shelters.

For more information about ADS, search www.unitedanimalfriends.org or call Animal Disaster Services at 777-8736. Links are included for evacuation kits for animals, an equine emergency fire plan and evacuation preparedness information.
