Letter: Spelling bee winners garner words of praise

Congratulations to Xavier Barrow, an eighth-grader from Prescott Mile High Middle School, who is the champion of the 62nd annual Yavapai County Spelling Bee. We also recognize the accomplishments of Mikayla Mouritsen (seventh grade) of Model Creek School as the runner-up; Virgil Van Proyen (sixth grade) of Cottonwood Middle School, who finished third; and Jeremiah McDowell (fourth grade) from Tavasci Elementary School, who took fourth place.

Fifty students participated in the bee representing district and charter schools, private schools, and home school groups.

Good luck to Xavier as he represents Yavapai County in the State Spelling Bee in the studios of KAET-TV on the Arizona State University campus March 29.

Special thanks to Camp Verde Unified School District for playing host to the event. Superintendent Jeff Van Handle, Principal Dan Brown and their staff were wonderful to work with. JoLynne Richter, our pronouncer, has provided voluntary expertise to our bee for 24 years. Special thanks to bee coordinator Robin Bascom of the Yavapai County Education Service Agency for all of her organizational talents.

M&I Bank provides a significant financial contribution to support the Spelling Bee that we greatly appreciate.

Tim Carter

Yavapai County School Superintendent
