Obituary: Mertice E. (Pat) Schmidt
Mertice E. (Pat) Schmidt was born in St. Joseph, Mo. Jan. 17, 1920, the daughter of Oscar and Isabel Schmidt.
She and her family were members of First English Lutheran Church where Pat was an active member of the Senior Luther League.
A graduate of Park College in Parkville, Mo., and Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary, Maywood, Ill., she went on to be a counselor to Lutheran students at the University of Denver and The University, Boulder, Colo., and later was Lutheran student counselor at Minnesota University, Duluth, Minn.
In September 1958, she received a scholarship from the Lutheran World Federation for a year's work in an exchange program for church workers in Berlin, Germany. She worked in a church-sponsored community for refugees offering a combination program of recreational and religious activities.
Later, she entered the University of Missouri from which she received a master's degree in Library Science.
The remainder of her work life was spent at the Denver Public Library, Denver, Colo.
Her major volunteer work in Denver was her church and the United Nations Association. In Prescott it was the Prescott Public Library's book sales department.
Pat leaves two cousins in St. Joseph, Mo., Wheeler Schmidt and Dorothy Schmidt Shaw; a niece, Mary Lou Hamilton (Mrs. William) of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Ruth Auchenback, a long-time friend with whom she shared a casita at Good Samaritan Society-Prescott Village.
Services will take place at a later date in St. Joseph, Mo. A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at the chapel of Good Samaritan Society-Prescott Village with Pastor Wally Cole from American Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1600 Grant St., Denver, CO 80203 or Good Samaritan Society, 1030 Scott Drive, Prescott, AZ 86301.
