Letter: Blame Congress for sky-high gas prices
Who is really responsible for the high prices you pay for gasoline?
The Democrats continue their effort to blame the rising prices of gasoline and fuel oil on the Republicans. Never mind the fact that they in 2006 ran on the promise to keep gasoline prices low.
Since 1980 the Democrats began their refusal to allow offshore drilling, Alaskan oil drilling, the construction of nuclear power plants and wind farms off the coast of New England. Why are the Democrats kowtowing to the wishes of their environmental supporters over the basic needs of 300 million American citizens?
For the past 28 years Democrats and a few Republicans have opposed our drilling for oil in Alaska's ANWR area when we knew it contained at least 10 billion barrels of oil we could be using now. Only 8 percent of ANWR would be open for exploration. That means 17.5 million acres will remain permanently closed to development. More than 75 percent of Alaskans favor exploration and production in ANWR.
The Democrat spokesmen all say that if we were to allow drilling offshore, in Alaska, and that if we were to allow nuclear power plants, it would be a least 10 years before we would realize anything in production. That may be true, but if we had begun to act in 1980 the "10-year" claim would be a moot point! We would have had energy prices under control.
It is a disgrace that all they now know how to do is relentlessly criticize, complain and condemn. They are constantly blocking and obstructing every effort for us to become more productive and less dependent on foreign oil.
Our Congressional leadership needs to muster the courage to begin reversing past mistakes now.
