Obituary: Bennie S. Archuleta Jr.

Bennie S. Archuleta Jr. passed away Jan. 12, 2008, in the company of loved ones. He was born Feb. 9, 1949, in Las Vegas, N.M., and grew up in Denver and Las Vegas.

Bennie received a Master's degree from Highlands University and his medical degree from the University of New Mexico, specializing in cardiology. Bennie performed his internship and residency at Emmanuel Hospital in Portland, Ore. He was an associate with Albuquerque Cardiac Associates, Cardiology Associates of New Mexico, Desert Cardiology in Tucson and Arizona Heart Institute in Prescott. His associates remember the excellent, professional care and respect he gave to all his patients and those he treated were always grateful to have Bennie as their doctor. He was currently serving on the Board of Directors for Jet Trucks, was on the Institutional Review Board and was a research investigator for Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation and served on the Khatali Alumni Board, UNM School of Medicine.

Bennie retired in 2003 and spent the next five years living life to the fullest. He pursued his passions for photography, art, travel, baseball and family and was happiest spending time at his ranch in Sapello.

Bennie is survived by his parents, Bennie and Eva Archuleta of Las Vegas, N.M.; brother Toby and wife Anita of Alaska, brother Ruben and wife Theresa of Rio Rancho, N.M.; nephews Christopher, Angelo, Stephen, Richard, Daniel, Alexander and Nicholas; nieces, Audrey and Anita; stepson Derick Ce D Baca and his wife Carlene and their children; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was also loved and will be missed by Janet Ce D Baca, Lisa Sewell and her son Ren, Frankie Ce D Baca, Cesar Pruneda, Peggy Chadwick and many wonderful friends and associates that have enjoyed being with Bennie over the years laughing, telling jokes, sharing a good cigar and glass of spirits or just sitting on the porch at Rancho Del Oso watching a sunset and enjoying the stillness. He will be remembered as a caring friend, generous spirit, and a loving son and brother.

Services were Jan. 18, 2008, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, Las Vegas, N.M. A rosary began at 1 p.m. followed by a funeral mass at 2 p.m. A celebration of life was be from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Elks Club, 2305 Collins Drive, Las Vegas, N.M. Private internment will be at the San Ignacio Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bennie's memory to the University of New Mexico Medical School.
