YC baseball sweeps Salt Lake
Weather chased the Yavapai College baseball team from home, but not from the win column.
The Roughriders, still seeking their 2008 home opener, opted instead to host Salt Lake in a Tuesday doubleheader at a drier Central Arizona College in Coolidge. Though their "home" game became a long road trip, YC still managed a two-game sweep.
Pitching was in strong supply. Yavapai won the opening game 8-1, then stopped the Bruins 5-3 in the nightcap. The Roughriders improved to 3-2-1 on the spring with their first two-game winning streak of the early going.
Freshman right-hander Russ Havens was in command, issuing just one earned run on four hits in six winning innings. He walked one and fanned five before turning it over to the bullpen's Jared Norris who tossed one perfect inning.
Norris also went 2-for-3 from the plate. Bobby Rinard had two hits, including a double.
Pitching again was the difference in Game 2. Taylor Lewis went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out six. Freshman Rick Anton got the win in relief, throwing 2 1/3 shutout innings with three strikeouts. Kole Calhoun finished it off, earning his second save of the year in one inning of work.
Yavapai will again try Wednesday to officially open the home portion of its schedule. The Roughriders and Bruins will make a game-time decision on the field at Roughrider Park where the teams hope to get in a single, 9-inning game starting at 1 p.m.
Justin Harper is scheduled to throw for YC.
