Final day to make tax credit donation

Today is the last day to make a tax credit contribution to schools and non-profit organizations.

A tax credit is not a tax deduction, but rather a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the actual tax a taxpayer owes.

For example, if a taxpayer owes $300 in Arizona State income tax and he or she donates $200 in tax credit money to a school, he or she may subtract the $200 from the tax bill.

Individuals cannot exceed a $200 contribution to a school to support extra curricular activities or character education programs at public or private schools, or a donation to a qualified school tuition organization for scholarships to private schools. Married taxpayers filing a joint return cannot exceed $400.

Extra curricular activities are school-sponsored activities that require students to pay a fee to participate. Such programs could include before- or after-school music, art, drama or athletic clubs.

Taxpayers will receive a receipt for their contributions in January. They must make their contribution to the school or district office by Dec. 31, or send a check postmarked with today's date.

The Humboldt Unified School District office is open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. today, and is located at the east end of town, 8677 E. Highway 69. For more information, call 759-4000.
