• •• THE DARK KNIGHT - Batman faces off for the first time against the Joker and Two-Face in this prequel-sequel. Cast: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and some menace. Action/thriller.

• FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON - In this film set in Paris and inspired by Albert Lamorisse's 1956 classic "The Red Balloon," seven-year-old Simon is being followed by a red balloon that has grown attached to the boy. The balloon, which seems to have its own personality, hovers over the boy and his family as his mother works to put on a puppet show based on a Yuan Dynasty story, and a Taiwanese film student who looks after Simon brings her camera everywhere and films everything she sees. Cast: Juliette Binoche, Simon Iteanu, Hippolyte Girardot, Song Fang, Louise Margolin. Unrated. Drama. French-language; subtitled.

•• GET SMART - When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency Control is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, teaming him with the lovely-but-lethal Agent 99. Armed with nothing but a few high-tech gadgets and his unbridled enthusiasm, Smart must thwart the doomsday plans of KAOS head Siegfried. Cast: Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terence Stamp. Rated PG-13 for some rude humor, action violence and language. Comedy.

The public has finally had enough; as grateful as they are to have their local hero, the good citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Soon, the caustic crusader begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all. Cast: Will Smith, Jason Bateman, Charlize Theron, Eddie Marsan. • MONGOL - Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in this historical epic. The film paints a multidimensional portrait of the conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of hoary stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. • •• THE MUMMY 3: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR - When dashing adventurer Alex O'Connell is tricked into awakening an evil emperor from ancient China from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents. Striding the Far East with unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force... unless the O'Connells can stop him first. • •• SPACE CHIMPS - Ham III, the slacker grandson of the first chimp blasted into space before manned spaceflight, joins two other astronaut chimps for a dangerous mission through a black hole to an inhabited planet. When they're stranded there, the chimps must help the inhabitants rid themselves of a tyrannical leader, and then figure out how to get back to Earth. • •• STEP BROTHERS - Brennan Huff is a sporadically employed 39-year-old who lives with his mother, Nancy. Dale Doback is a terminally unemployed 40-year-old who lives with his father, Robert. When Robert and Nancy marry and move in together, Brennan and Dale are forced to live with each other as step-brothers. When their antagonistic antics split the new family apart, they must form an unlikely bond to reunite their parents. Cast: Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Mary Steenburgen, Richard Jenkins, Adam Scott. • •• WALL-E - What if mankind had to leave Earth, and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off? After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was built for, WALL-E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) discovers a new purpose in life (besides collecting knick-knacks) when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE. EVE comes to realize that WALL-E has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planet's future, and races back to space to report her findings to the humans (who have been eagerly awaiting word that it is safe to return home). Voice cast: Fred Willard, Jeff Garlin, Ben Burtt, Sigourney Weaver, John Ratzenberger. Rated G. Animated comedy.
