Area animal rescues join up for Adopt-A-Thon

We have some exciting news! PetSmart is sponsoring another Adopt-A-Thon. The Yavapai Humane Society, along with Miss Kitty's Cat House, Greyhound Rescue, Golden Retriever Rescue, and United Animal Friends will again join together to participate in this upcoming adoption event. This will be a three-day program at the Prescott PetSmart store located west of the Costco store off Highway 69. We will be at PetSmart from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, Saturday, Sept. 15, and Sunday, Sept. 16. Many amazing, adoptable pets will be there for you and your family to meet. We will have dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens of all ages, colors, and sizes looking for loving, lifetime homes. Each animal has been spayed or neutered, and each has their basic vaccinations. While you're attending this event, we invite you to enjoy hotdogs and soda on us. Our staff and volunteers will be manning the grill all three days, so come hungry!

For the past month, the team at YHS has been gearing up for this Adopt-A-Thon. Our shelter is currently filled with dogs and cats available for adoption, and many of them will be at this adoption event. We ask everyone who is considering the adoption of a new pet to stop by PetSmart the weekend of Sept. 14 to 16 to check out the dogs and cats waiting for new homes. If you are thinking about adding another dog to your household, we suggest you bring your current dog so you can evaluate the compatibility of the resident pooch with the canine under consideration. We will have a securely fenced "get acquainted" area set up in the parking area that can be used for this purpose. This area will also be an ideal place for you and your family to interact with a dog or puppy you may be thinking of adopting.

We are very excited about this event because it promises to be a fun-filled weekend allowing us to show many pets looking for new homes. All the companion animals that will be available for adoption are deserving of a second chance to be part of a loving family. However, only a sample will be on hand as there are so many looking for new homes. As our community continues to grow, so does the pet population. And we take this opportunity to stress the importance of spaying or neutering your pets to reduce the number of homeless animals. Of course, as previously stated, any animal adopted from one of the participating rescue groups at this event will have been spayed or neutered.

If we can find suitable new homes for all the animals that will be present at the Adopt-A-Thon, it would be a dream come true. But we want to emphasize that if you do adopt a pet from one of the rescue groups at the Adopt-A-Thon, please do so because you truly want a new family pet; and understand the responsibilities that accompany your decision. Remember, acquiring a pet is a family decision and a lifetime commitment. Few things are more stressful for one of our animals then being returned to the shelter because the adopter was not properly prepared to take on the responsibility of pet ownership.

Even if now is not the right time for you to adopt a pet, come on out and take part in the festivities anyway. We'll spring for a hotdog and a soda! We hope to see you at the PetSmart Adopt-A-Thon the weekend of Sept. 14 to16. Please mark your calendar.
