Mogollon ends Mayer's season
The Mayer Wildcats won't be returning to the 1A State championship game in 2007, after a tough Friday night 44-18 road loss to the rival Mogollon Mustangs.
"We ran into a really good Mustang team," Mayer coach Rick Lashley said. "They just brought it to us all night, and we had a few breakdowns in tackling, a few blown coverages on a fake punt, and I think that just set us back."
The Mustangs were looking for payback after Mayer handed them a tough 28-20 loss in the 2006 championship game.
Mogollon's rushing attack proved to be the downfall of the Wildcats. The Wildcats also gave up five turnovers, including four interceptions.
The Mustangs (7-1) scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, both on rushing touchdowns. Mogollon added a third touchdown in the second quarter on a 26-yard run. A few missed conversions made the score 22-0.
Mayer (6-4) answered with perhaps its biggest play of the night - a 54-yard kickoff return by quarterback Aaron Sullivan. Sullivan later completed the drive with a 29-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jancarlo Beck.
The Mustangs added a touchdown and a safety before the half, making the score 30-6.
The Wildcats opened the second half with a 37-yard touchdown run by running back Luke O'Sullivan, but failed to get the extra point. Mogollon answered back with at quick touchdown, and both teams didn't score again until late in the fourth.
Aaron Sullivan connected for 6 of 18 passes for 95 yards, and 5 rushes for 24 yards. He made 21 tackles on defense at defensive back.
