Obituary: Marie Elizabeth Hough
Marie Elizabeth Hough, age 96, passed away Nov. 3, 2007, at her home in Mayer, Ariz. She was born March 16, 1911, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Rebecca and Bastian Siereveld. She and her husband George Daniel Hough married in 1933 and moved to Phoenix, Ariz., with their daughter Jean (McGrath) in 1940.
Marie had a long and successful career in the shoe department at the Goldwater's Store of Phoenix. She and George enjoyed exploring Arizona in their Jeeps. They spent many summers at their summer home in Crown King, Ariz. They both enjoyed prospecting and at one time owned the Tiger Mine in the Bradshaws.
Marie was an avid hiker and gardener; her zest for life touched many. She could cheer anyone with her generous spirit and great cooking. She always loved animals, making sure that not one was hungry or cold. Her grandchildren benefited beyond measure from her legacy of strong determination and generosity.
Upon retirement, they moved to Yarnell, Ariz., and then Wickenburg, Ariz. In 2001, Marie moved to Mayer, Ariz., where her family cared for her.
Marie is survived by her daughter, Jean McGrath, of Peoria, Ariz.; grandchildren Jon McGrath of Mayer, Susan Connors of Mayer and Annie McGrath of Glendale, Ariz.; six great-grandchildren, Katy, Megan and Claire Connors of Mayer, and Iris, Cedar and Butch Sugarman of Glendale. Also many nieces and nephews including Joan Bates of Prescott, Ariz., Rose Roche of Lansing, Mich., Norma Andree of Grand Rapids, Mich., Shirley Folkertsma of Alto, Mich., Ted Siereveld of Grand Rapids, Mich., Robert Siereveld of White Cloud, Mich., Joyce Bandy of Lansing, Mich., Jim Hough of Paradise, Mich., Marlene Gatewood of Lansing, Mich., and Don Hough of Lansing, Mich.
A celebration of life and memorial potluck will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, at the Big Bug Station in the Historic Mayer Building on Oak and Central. This seems fitting since Marie was the best cook in all of Michigan and Arizona.
The family would like to express deep gratitude to Meals on Wheels of Mayer and Granite Mt. Home Care and Hospice, whose staff so lovingly befriended and cared for Marie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice. Checks can be made to The Garth B. Last Foundation, 3106 Clearwater Drive, Prescott, AZ 86309.
Sunrise Funeral Home of Prescott Valley assisted the family with arrangements.
