Florence Karbens

Florence Karbens passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2007, at the age of 93.

She was a strong woman who was barely sick a day before she developed complications from a fall this January. She spent her last day surrounded by her loved ones, listening to laughter and tears as they recalled their stories of her life. She passed peacefully from this world with her loved ones at her side, while the chaplain prayed and played a hymn.

Flo was born in Chicago on January 23, 1914, to Emma and Christ Walter and her older brother Erwin "Bucky" Walter. As a young child they moved to Germany where they lived with family in Berlin for several years before returning to Chicago. When she returned she had to relearn English, but was forever able to speak German to her cousins in Berlin whom she visited several times over the years. In Chicago, she worked in her parent's German delicatessen while growing up. Later she worked as a housemaid in Wilmette during the Depression where she learned to play the piano. She married Jacob "Jack" Karbens in 1940 and had two daughters, Jackie and Lois. She supported her family by working as a coil winder until she opened her own delicatessen Palatine, the Palatine Pantry. Her potato salad recipe is still coveted. In 1969 she sold the store and became a telephone operator in Des Plaines and upon retirement was the switchboard operator at the Arlington Park Hilton.

Following the death of her youngest daughter, Lois, in 1991, she moved to Prescott, Arizona in 1992. She had many wonderful years in Arizona before a short illness convinced her to move home and live with her daughter Jackie, in Harvard, Illinois. She loved to play the piano, dance, read, travel and crochet. Her lifelong passion was for the many dogs she adopted and she could always be found caring for all the neighborhood dogs and cats.

She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Morgan (Dale Beagle); two grandchildren, Susan Dimenn (William) Deigaard and Kerria (fiancé Jeremy Pollard) Dimenn; and two great grandchildren, Audrey and Adele Deigaard; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Because of her passion for animals, in lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the ASPCA Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 96929, Washington, DC 20077-7127.

As she always said, "Never fear when Flo is here."

Visitation and service at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights, Ill. Interment at Randhill Cemetery.

Herb Lane, 85, went home to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on March 11, 2007, Prescott, Arizona. Herb was born in Decker, Indiana August 30, 1921, to Lloyd Frank Lane and Jessie Helena Graham Lane. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bobby Doyle Lane, Ellis Frank Lane; and his loving wife of 27 years, Velda Elaine Scull Lane.

He is survived by his daughter Sharon (Bob) Davis; son Greg (Gail) Lane; grandchildren, Deana (John) Winn, Elaine (Todd) White, Randy (Riffany) Lane, Carrie (Kevin) Bell, Jason (Tatum) Logan, Heather (Matt) Monahen; and 19 great grandchildren.

Herb was a member of the 1938-39 Decker High School Basketball team that won the Wasbash Valley Championship. Quite a feat for such a small school. After graduation he worked for Farrell Milling until he entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served with Company A 14th Armored Infantry Battalion in North Africa and Italy. Upon his return from the war he met and married Velda Elaine Scull on July 25, 1947 in Vincennes, Indiana.

The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1954 where Herb worked in appliance sales and as a buyer for Bower Stationery (Stationers Corp.) until his retirement in 1988.

Herb was very proud of his family. He was always eager to tell his friends and co-workers about his children and grandchildren and all of our accomplishments whether academic, athletic, dramatic, musical or just plain comical. His greatest passion was the study and teaching of God's Word. He taught adult Sunday school classes and served as Sunday School Supt. At Westdale Nazarene Church and Phoenix First Wesleyan Church. He also loved to sing and served as a worship song leader at various times throughout his life.

Herb touched the lives of many people and was much loved. We will miss him greatly. Matthew 25:21 "Well done thou good and faithful servantŠ"

A memorial service will be Thursday, March 15, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the VA Chapel on the grounds of the VA Medical Center, Highway 89, Prescott, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
