Prescott duo goes national in racquetball
Steve Joannes and Jerry Northwood brought their racquetball game to the national level.
Joannes, of Prescott Valley, and Northwood, of Prescott, competed in the recent national senior tournament. Joannes lost in the semifinal round of the Men's 50 Open Division, while Northwood lost a heart-breaking first-round exit in the Men's 70 Open Division.
Joannes was competing fresh off his third consecutive Arizona state racquetball title. He won his first three matches before former pro Randy Stafford stopped him in a tie-breaker.
"The most exciting thing about nationals is being able to watch the greatest players in the world compete," Joannes said. "The athleticism of racquetball is rarely matched by any other sport."
Northwood, normally dominant in his age category, lost to the eventual second-place finisher, Al Miller. Northwood will look to even things up when he competes in Kansas City later this fall.
Both Joannes and Northwood will conduct a "Youth Clinic and Demo Day" later this summer to introduce area youth to the sport. For more information, contact Northwood at 778-9619.
