PRESCOTT The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Thursday arrested a 16-year-old Cottonwood girl after she alerted the 17-year-old suspect in the Amber Alert search that authorities were on the way to arrest him, a police spokesperson said.
Corey James Sgarlata of Cottonwood saw deputies approaching him and he picked up 3-year-old Skyland Childress and began to run through traffic in an effort to avoid arrest, deputies say.
After a short pursuit, the deputies caught up with Sgarlata and the girl, who was unharmed. Child Protective Services took the child.
Meanwhile, Sgarlata is in custody at the Yavapai County Juvenile Detention Center as well as the 16-year-old girl. It is unclear what charges they are facing at this time.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Susan Quayle said two additional arrests are pending in this case.
