Tourney results; Tennis Channel Open this week

There were no Washingtons or Lincolns represented in person at the President's Day-Luck of the Draw Doubles tournament at the Roughrider Tennis Center this past Sunday. But there were three Jacksons Š Mallory, Amanda and Jake, possibly descendants of Andrew.

Twenty-four tennis players took to the courts on a beautiful February afternoon and played five rounds of eight no-ad games with their scores determining who fell into the A, B and C single elimination divisions for the most unusual prizes.

The No. 1 team of Marty Otting and partner Portia Rey went down in the semis of the A division to eventual finalists Megan Perry and John Medina 5-4 (1). In the other semis, Jake Jackson and John Stadnik lost to the champions Kellie Shanahorn and Dana Wingate in another 5-4 one point tie-break. Shanahorn and Wingate won the finals 5-2 over Perry and Stadnik.

Cathy Low and Robin Fox were the B champions as they defeated Georgio Rey and Larry Cobb 5-3. Semi-finalists were Cecilia McGuire/George Reynolds and high school tennis players Cade Decker/Amanda Jackson.

Prescott High School boys tennis team players Jeremy Basham and Johnny Francis became the C champions in their finals win over Dinah Lunsford and Jenny Cobb 5-1. Semi-finalists were Mallory Jackson/Audrey Mae and Lynn Wisehart/Joe Scott.

The next one-day tournament is the "Spring Fling Doubles", which is a mixed only A-B & C event. It takes place Sunday, March 12 from noon-4 p.m. Call 445-1331 to enter.

*Let's Cheer Them On: Both Prescott and Prescott Valley high school tennis teams start their seasons today and play most of their matches on Tuesdays and Thursdays. (Prescott will be playing its matches at Yavapai College; Bradshaw plays on its own campus).

Wouldn't it be really nice for more of the local tennis players to attend their matches when possible to give support and cheer them on? Football, basketball, baseball, soccer and even volleyball seem to always have a decent showing of fans. Let's do that for our tennis players, too.
