Obituary for 8-27-2006

June Barbara Zinckgraf Coad

June Barbara Zinckgraf Coad passed away peacefully on July 20, 2006. June was 81 years old and resided in Prescott for 32 years. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1925, the eldest daughter of Raymond G. and Susan (Roy) Zinckgraf. She graduated from Hunter College High School (1942) and Hunter College (1946) in New York City. In 1946, June became a member of the National Guild of Organists. She earned a master's degree in Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary in 1948 with an emphasis on organ performance.

June then took a position in Redmond, Oregon, teaching high school math and music. In Redmond, she met Carl H. Coad and married him in 1949. They started married life on a farm in Culver, Oregon. Her two daughters were born while the family lived on the farm. June was able to pursue her musical career by playing organ and directing choirs at local churches in central Oregon, Eugene and the Portland, Oregon, area. She was active with Mu Phi Epsilon, a national organization of musicians. With her extensive musical training, June was able to identify a piece of classical music within the first few bars of a performance.

June and her husband Carl moved to Prescott in 1974. June was an accomplished and prolific knitter, and in recent years was always working on one or more projects. In about 1985, June established The Fiber Shop, a store dedicated to knitters and weavers interested in unique and natural fibers. June introduced her customers to the skills of hand knitting and machine knitting. She spent many happy hours working in her store, especially after her husband Carl passed away in 1999.

June is survived by her brother, R. George Zinckgraf, Jr. of San Carios, Calif., and her sister, Susan Schott of Shelter Island and Woodside, N.Y. In addition, she is survived by her two daughters, Gail Coad of Amherst, N.H. and Beth Coad of New Ipswich, N.H., as well as her grandchildren, Robert and Linnea McGinness.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to the Sharlot Hall Museum, where a specific account has been established in memory of Carl & June Coad.

An open house memorial celebration will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 1 at the gazebo of the Sharlot Hall Museum, 415 W. Gurley St., Prescott, phone 445-3122.
