Philip N. "Phil" Dunham

Philip N. "Phil" Dunham, age 84, a Dewey resident since 1983, passed away at his home on March 29, 2005, after a year's illness. He was born in Oshkosh, Wis., on Sept. 25, 1920, to Rex and Dorothy (Neuenfeldt) Dunham. His mother celebrated her 104th birthday in March this year.

Phil is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Dewey; his mother, Dorothy Neuenfeldt of Winnebago, Wis.; four children, Father Larry C. Dunham, Catholic Priest of the Franciscan Order, of Albuquerque, N.M., Robert B. Dunham of Canyon Lake, Calif., Thomas R. (Kim) Dunham of San Martin, Calif.; and daughter, Austin B. Dunham of Lewistown, Mont. He is also survived by brothers, Robert W. (Esther) Dunham of Madison, Wis., Thomas J. (Janet) Dunham of Oshkosh, Wis., Lee E. (Trudy) Dunham of Neenah, Wis.; two sisters, Susan (Robert) Wentzel of Winneconne, Wis., Marilyn (Dan) Anderson of Oshkosh, Wis.; two grandsons, Garrett and Troy Dunham; and one granddaughter, Amy Charbonneau.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rex Dunham, and an infant grandson, Chase Dunham.

Phil graduated from Oshkosh High School at age 17 and went to work for his grandfather, driving a delivery truck in Detroit, Mich. At age 19, on the advice of his mother, he joined the army and began training as an aircraft radio operator. Rising through the ranks, he retired 20 years later as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. During his army career, Phil attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a BS degree in electrical engineering.

After leaving the service, he worked as an engineer for various companies, Boeing Airplane Company, American Machine and Foundry, North American Aviation, and Rockwell International.

Much of his work was with space programs, notably the Apollo Moon Shot, the Shuttle Program, and the Global Positioning Satellite Program. The GPS program was still in a work-in-progress stage when Phil retired from Rockwell International at the end of 1982.

While working full time as an engineer, Phil began taking evening classes at law school. Eventually graduating from Pepperdine University School of Law in California, he then passed the state bar exam and was admitted to the California State Bar in 1972 at age 51. From this point on he was employed as an engineer-attorney by Rockwell International until he retired.

The Dunhams then left California and settled in the Dewey area. In 1984, Prescott Valley began a search for someone with a legal background to fill a new position they were creating, that of a part-time Municipal Judge. Phil was chosen from a group of applicants to fill that position at a weekly salary of $104 for two workdays per week. As Prescott Valley grew, the court's work increased accordingly and the position eventually became a full-time one. He retired in 1998 after 14-1/2 years on the bench.

Phil will be buried with military honors at Riverside Memorial Cemetery, which is located near March Air Reserve Base in California. A memorial Mass will be held in Albuquerque, N.M., conducted by his son, Father Larry Dunham, OFM.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, and he will live on in our hearts.

Cremation details and assistance to the family were handled by Arizona Wakelin Bradshaw Chapel in Prescott Valley. The family wishes to express appreciation to Ken Frederick for his special efforts on their behalf.
