Obituaries 8/18/05

Capt. Wallace R. Howard, USN retired, age 83, of Chino Valley, Ariz., died August 3, 2005. Capt. Howard served 32 years in The Medical Service Corps. He started his naval career as a Seaman Apprentice, and retired in 1973 as a Captain. He was awarded the Legion Of Merit for leadership in unprecedented medical regulating support to the conflict in Southeast Asia.

He was preceded in death by Mary Kane Howard, his first wife, Rosemary Howard Burns, his daughter, and sisters Sidola Howard and Elizabeth Howard Pruitt.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Imogene Howard, of Chino Valley; a son, John Howard of Chula Vista, Calif.; a daughter, Alison Howard Smith of Chula Vista, Calif.; one sister, Wanda Howard Shipley and husband Bill Shipley of Chino Valley; two grandsons, Matthew Smith of Chula Vista, Calif., and Christopher Burns of New Castle, Calif.; three stepsons, Rev. Stan Manus of Omaha, Neb., David Manus of Royers, Ark., and Philip Manus of Algon, Iowa; one stepdaughter, Margaret Manus DePenning of Cincinnati, Ohio; 12 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

He attended Grace Baptist Church in Chino Valley.

Interment at Dug Hill Cemetery, Bella Vista, Ark., with Military Honors.

He was a husband, father, brother and friend.

We each were blessed to have shared life's journey with him.

He enriched our lives with an abundance of love, sharing and caring.

He will be truly missed.

Ruth Thirkield, age 92, of Prescott, passed away on June 1, 2005. Ruth was born on August 7, 1912 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Ruth moved to Prescott in September 1996.

Her children are Mary Harsin, William and wife Barbara Denney of Prescott.

Announcing a celebration of life August 20 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Barbara and William Denney's home located at 5592 Hole In One Dr., Prescott.

Doris L. Smusz, 77, of Prescott Valley, born Feb. 11, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y., died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, in Prescott Valley.

A memorial Mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, in St. Germaine Catholic Church, 7997 E. Dana Drive, Prescott Valley. A private cremation took place at the Arizona Wakelin Bradshaw Crematory in Prescott Valley.

Melanie Marie David, 47, of Prescott, born July 17, 1958, in Petaluma, Calif., died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, while visiting friends in California.

A visitation and gathering of friends will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, at the Hampton Funeral Home, 240 S. Cortez St., Prescott.

A funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Richard DeTore, C.M.F., as celebrant.
