Road Construction

Following are construction and street project updates from the City of Prescott:

Willow Creek Road Phase 4

Work in the next week consists of removals, earthwork, culvert installation and lowering of fiber-optic lines.

The work is not likely to affect traffic on this 1.2-mile stretch of Willow Creek Road, between Commerce Drive and Haas Boulevard.

In addition to improvements corresponding with previous phases of Willow Creek Road widening, this phase entails new pavement, new concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk, and a curbed median. The project also includes a new traffic signal at the intersection of Heritage Park Road and the new entrance to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, as well as a pedestrian underpass for the City of Prescott Mile High Trail System.

Primary money for the project comes from the city's 1-percent sales tax for road improvements and open space. Vastco, Inc. is the city's contractor for this phase. The project should be complete in November.

Iron Springs Road

Black Drive

Gail Gardner Way

The construction schedule in the next week has crews doing more of the same – excavation for water and sewer lines and a new storm drain, and excavation for the Gail Gardner Way extension – and only during the day.

Crews are taking the night shift off in the next week until utility excavations reach the point that night work can resume.

Motorists should give themselves extra time to get through the Iron Springs/Gail Gardner intersection during heavy traffic periods. Two-way traffic continues at all times, with lane restrictions occurring intermittently.

Ponderosa Plaza Drive remains closed to through traffic, with business access maintained from Willow Creek Road and Iron Springs.

The $4.38 million Iron Springs/Black/Gail Gardner project entails:

• Reconstruction of the existing Ponderosa Plaza Drive (which will become Gail Gardner Way) from Iron Springs Road to its intersection with Black Drive.

• Construction of a new segment of Gail Gardner Way extending from Black Drive north and east of the new shopping center to Willow Creek Road at Prescott Heights Drive, creating a signalized intersection.

• Reconstruction of Black Drive from Willow Creek Road and its west end at what will become Gail Gardner Way.

• Construction of a drainage system that will carry 100-year storm flows from Willow Creek Road to Miller Creek southwest of Iron Springs Road at Gail Gardner.

The city's 1-percent sales tax for road improvements and open space is the primary money source for the project, with developers and the Yavapai Flood Control District contributing about $800,000 of total project costs.

Weekly updates for this improvement project are on the city Web site, www.cityofprescott.net.

Wal-Mart site

earth blasting

Earth blasting at the Wal-Mart supercenter development site in northwest Prescott may resume late in the next week, either Thursday or Friday, May 6-7.

Don Shoemake of Blasting Contractors said he was waiting for better access to the site before resuming production blasting.

Interested residents and business people may check the city Web site or contact the city's 24-hour hotline for the schedule when it is available. The blasting schedule is on the construction updates page of the Web site, www.cityofprescott.net. The hotline number is 777-CITY.

All future earth blasts at the site – the future Village at the Boulders shopping center – are occurring between 4 and 4:30 p.m.

Blasting is necessary along the northern boundary of the Wal-Mart site for excavation and setback purposes. For more information, call 777-1362 or 777-1349.
