Area racquetball players win big at Senior Olympic Games
Thirty two sports and competitors from all over the state of Arizona were on hand at the recent State Senior Olympics, and the area's athletes certainly made an impact.
Especially local racquetball players.
Five from the tri-city area, all playing out of the Territorial Courthouse, competed at ASU. All five medaled in singles and doubles, with the gold medal winners automatically qualifying for the National Senior Olympics in Pittsburgh next year.
In singles, Prescott's Jerry Northwood and Oscar Hill brought home the gold with Northwood competing in the 65+ age group and Hill among the 60 and overs.
Roger Timian won the silver in the 65+ and Dave Carey was good enough to bring home the bronze in the 50+ group.
In doubles, Northwood and Timian teamed for the gold (65+), but weren't the only locals to play above the field. Also winning golds were Hill and his PX partner (60+) and Ray Thompson and his sidekick in the 75+.
