Another late rally lifts YC

Staying true to form in this early season, the Yavapai College baseball team again came up big in the ninth inning Friday to snag a region victory.

Roughrider sophomore Steve Hoffner hit a bases-loaded triple in the final frame to break open a 1-1 game en route to a 5-3 victory at Glendale. After Yavapai, now 6-1-2 overall and 3-1 in ACCAC play, added another run to the lead, the Aztecs put two on the board in the bottom half of the inning thans to a dropped flyball in the outfield. Still, starter Matt Trink was able to finish off Glendale for the victory.

Trink, right-handed freshman out of Scottsdale, tossed a complete game three-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks. Because of the error in the ninth, only one of the three runs was earned.

Glendale took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, a score that held up for the home team until the top of the eighth. Then Yavapai freshman Patrick Caldwell got the Roughrider bats going with an eighth-inning solo shot to knot the score.

In the ninth, freshman Marcus Henninger led off with a single. Freshman Luis Herrera and freshman Gered Mochizuki followed with singles to jam the bases. That set up Hoffner's three-RBI triple. Esteban Lopez later had an RBI hit for the 5-1 lead.

Hoffner was one of three Roughriders against Glendale with a multiple-hit game, finishing 2-for-5 with three RBI. Lopez had a 3-for-5 day with one RBI and two doubles and Caldwell ended up 2-for-5 with a single and home run.

The same two teams square off for a double header today at noon.
