Prescott-area instructors often use Watson, Goldwater, Lynx, Willow and Granite Basin lakes for their own recreational purposes, but teach only on the city waters of Watson, Goldwater and Willow lakes. Sandberg said he would need a special U.S. Forest Service permit to instruct on Lynx and Granite Basin lakes.
"Anybody can step right into these classes and get a good basic knowledge to start going out in a boat on lakes in the area," said Susie Bragg, an ACA certified flatwater kayak instructor who collaborates with Sandberg.
Bragg, affiliated with the Prescott Paddle America Club, is in charge of the organization's membership. She assists Hustedt and Sandberg in operating their classes — teaching fundamental rescue skills and paddle strokes for lake kayakers.
This week Bragg and other local ACA certified kayak instructors taught an introductory kayaking class to a group of area Boy Scouts. They primarily touched on kayaking safety, rescue, and equipment — which the Prescott YMCA and Scuba Fantaseas shop provides for the program.
To register for a kayaking class, visit the Prescott YMCA or call Scuba Fantaseas at 717-1419. Interested students should be good swimmers who are in decent physical shape.
