PRESCOTT – People will remember the rape case involving defendant Joseph Zylstra not only for the fact that authorities found and convicted him with the help of science, but also as the case in which Yavapai County applied a new law for the first time.
A jury convicted Zylstra in October on two counts of sexual assault and three counts of kidnapping. A month later, the same jury, rather than a judge, found that aggravating factors existed in the case. Based on that, the judge could impose a stiffened prison term for Zylstra.
