YCSO issues holiday caution after 89A 'wrong-way' DUI

A deputy heading home after training recruits in DUI enforcement made a DUI arrest after avoiding a head-on collision. A 25-year-old Prescott Valley woman went to county jail on misdemeanor DUI and extreme DUI charges.

"Deputy Todd Anderson was on his way back from training a class of new recruits at the Northern Arizona Regional Training Academy in Prescott Valley on Friday when he spotted the vehicle coming towards him on SR 89A, east-bound in the west-bound lane of traffic," said Yavapai County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Susan Quayle. "Anderson had to swerve his fully marked YCSO patrol vehicle to avoid a head-on collision with the wrong-way vehicle."

Anderson turned around and followed the vehicle for approximately two miles with his emergency lights activated before the driver finally yielded to the side of the roadway.

The driver told Anderson that she did not realize she was traveling the wrong way and that the new roadways in the area are confusing to her. Anderson arrested the woman for suspicion of DUI and took her to the Yavapai County jail in Prescott, where multiple tests measured her blood alcohol content (BAC) at .159 to .164. A BAC of .08 is regarded as DUI; a BAC of .15 brings extreme DUI charges.

"With the holiday season approaching, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office joins all local law enforcement agencies in encouraging Yavapai County residents to drink responsibly, drive smart and drive sober," Quayle said. "Before you drink that glass of wine or eggnog and then get behind the wheel of a vehicle, think about the possible consequences. A DUI will land you in jail, at best. While it may be warm and dry enough and you may even get a turkey meal on Christmas to share with your cellmate, it is certainly not the place anyone wnats to spend the holidays.

"At the worst, a DUI could take your life or the life of a family member or a complete stranger," she said.
