Grant buys safety upgrades for BC firefighters

Black Canyon City firefighters will be a little safer on fire scenes now, thanks to a grant the department has received to upgrade its self-contained breathing apparatus, or SCBAs, and protective masks.

One part of the $6,000 grant from Yavapai County Emergency Management paid for a test mask that will allow the department to pre-fit all of its firefighters for any mask they might have to wear on duty – whether firefighting respirators, emergency medical masks, or SCBAs. OSHA regulations require that the department specially fit each firefighter, said BC Fire Chief Tom Birch, and the one new mask will enable the department to fit for all types of masks.
