Joe Harrington, a 2003 graduate of Bradshaw Mountain High School, was one of three finalists for 4A-5A Scholar Athlete of the Year at the annual AIA (Arizona Interscholastic Association) awards ceremony, "Everyday Heroes," May 31 in Phoenix. Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano had designated May 31 Everyday Heroes Day in Arizona.
Harrington was BMHS's scholar athlete in three sports during his senior year: football, basketball and baseball, and one of four valedictorians for the Class of 2003. He had to get recommendation letters from a coach, athletic director, principal and counselor and write a list of his accomplishments to be eligible for the AIA honor, which the association awards to a boy and girl from the 1-3A ranks, and a boy and girl from 4-5A schools.
Harrington said the 4-5A Scholar Athlete, from Greenway, is a "good guy" - a state wrestling champion and football player with a 4.0 GPA.
The association gave awards in a variety of "of the Year" categories, including : official, coach, administrator and student in activities (other than sports), as well as school overall excellence for community involvement.
