Former POW recalls time in prison camp, bothering Germans

PRESCOTT – John Bell remembers taking bed slats out of his bunk and walking through the Stalag Luft III compound with a bag of sand inside his trousers, slowly releasing and mixing it with the German topsoil.

He removed bed slats to help support tunnels named "Tom," "Dick," and "Harry" that Allied forces' prisoners of war built under the German camp. He spread tunnel soil throughout the North compound so guards wouldn't realize that prisoners were excavating under the camp.
