People need to spay, neuter their best pets

EDITOR:

Many people think it would be wonderful to have their pet give birth to a litter of puppies or kittens. Are you thinking with your head or with your heart? The Yavapai Humane Society has plenty of puppies and kittens for you and your family to visit and play with. For every litter born, the same number of puppies or kittens will remain at the shelter and may never find homes.

If you allow your pet to have a litter, you are responsible for those lives. Each one will need a good home for life, medical care, immunizations, food, warmth, care and love. You are morally responsible for them. If no one adopts them, they may end up at the animal shelter. They may be like thousands of other puppies, kitten, dogs and cats that end up homeless each year in this county.

You may believe you have the best dog or cat in the world and that any litter would be just perfect. Animal shelters are full of offspring from the "best pet in the world."

Respect all animal life. Teach your children to do the same. If you are ready to commit to caring for a pet, adopt an animal at Yavapai Humane Society. Do not add to the problem by having another litter. Please spay or neuter your pets.

Bass prattles as though he knows his subject

EDITOR:

Mr. Bass, It's great to prattle on as though you know something, but when you talk about the NRA you are talking through your hat.

NRA is a single-issue lobby. Can I make it a more simple, single (meaning 1) issue (meaning topic)? It didn't even get involved in politics until the Gun Control Act of 1968 (you know, the copy of the NAZI law…see Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership website and buy their book if you don't believe me.)

Now when you get your "socially conscious" politicians to forget about gun control, the NRA becomes irrelevant. (And we all can go back to shooting and doing the things we like, instead of politics.) But, that won't happen, because "social consciousness" is really just another buzz word for socialist big government and the self righteous desire to meddle in other people's lives. And the two things that all politicians have in common are their oversized egos and their desire for power. (Writers just have one of those problems.)

However, going along with your delusion, if Ed Kennedy, Chuck Schumer, John McCain and all the other liberal wackos out there would just leave gun rights alone, who'd care what the NRA did, said or thought? You could go back to whatever you do, and I could go back to shooting.

Why publish 'Talk' on God blessing U.S.?

EDITOR:

You must have been short on material for the Jan. 6 editorial page. Why else would you publish "Why should God bless just U.S.?" The writer's point on "mindless patriotism" is valid if that patriotism results in harm to other people, cultures or countries. However, I fail to see where he gets the idea that the term "God Bless America" was ever meant to mean just us.

I'm sure that the writer of the song "God Bless America" did not view it that way, and I don't know anyone who does. I also don't think people who believe in God think He has just so much blessing to go around and if He "wastes" it on America, who the author believes doesn't need it, it will deprive the people who really do need it.

The author implies that our present show of patriotism is really "fear, anger, prejudice and paranoia" disguised as patriotism. I'm sure these emotions are more prevalent today than before Sept. 11, but I'm sure that they don't have anything to do with the present outpouring of patriotism and all the help given the victims. I also believe that if we are asking God to bless us to the exclusion of all others, why would we be the country that is the first to give aid to the needy of the world?

Why would we be the primary supporters of the United Nations food program for Afghanistan while the Islamic nations of Egypt and Saudi Arabia have contributed nothing?

I think the author's premise is ridiculous and why it was included under the "Talk of the Town" banner is amazing.
