Orme students capture third place in county math contest

Students from Prescott High School (PHS), Chino Valley High School (CVHS) and The Orme School captured first, second and third place trophies, respectively, for overall excellence in the recent 2002 Yavapai County High School Mathematics Contest at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU).

Nine schools from around the county participated in the contest. Sponsors were Embry-Riddle, Northern Arizona University, Yavapai College and the North Central Arizona Mathematics and Science Consortium.

Embry-Riddle professors Dick Hiatt and Richard Bloom welcomed the group and announced that ERAU would award scholarships to the top 10 seniors at the competition.

PHS students captured the big money. Winners and the scholarship amounts are Evan Richards, first place, $5,000; J.J. Campbell, second, $4,000; Liang "Mars" Zhuo, third, $3,000; and Stephanie Sara, fourth, $2,000.

Those receiving $1,000 scholarships were Ian Trushell, fifth, PHS; Yuki Kaneda, sixth, Orme; Chung Yong Park, seventh, Orme; Michael Matthews, eighth, CVHS; Kelly Harbin, ninth, CVHS; and Mattie Vallely, tenth, PHS.

"We were extremely proud of Prescott High School," said Sherry Baca, PHS math instructor and consortium director. "It was also super to see Prescott Mile High Middle School (PMHMS) eighth-graders compete in the College Bowl and end up defeating two other high school teams (Chino Valley and Orme) to end up in second place overall."

Further, PMHMS placed three students in the top five in Level 1 (Algebra I).

Level 1, Algebra I, individual honors, first, Tyler Mulholland, PMHMS; second, Tori Bowman, Granite Mountain Middle School (GMMS); third, Jessie Gift, PMHMS; fourth, Jeremy Moore, PMHMS; and fifth, Kayla Peck, Heritage Middle School (HMS). Top three schools: first, PMHMS; second, GMMS; and third, HMS.

Level 2, Geometry, individual honors, first, Adrienne Contos, PHS; second, Brad Glenn, PHS; third, Hee Hwan Lee, Orme; fourth, Sarah Andrews, Tri-City Prep High School; and fifth, Michael Templeton, Camp Verde High School. Top three schools: first, PHS; second, CVHS; and third, Orme.

Level 3, Algebra I, individual honors: first, Josh Smith, PHS; second, Josh Heffner, PHS; third, Sarah Pomeroy, PHS; fourth, David Boggs, PHS; and fifth, Reana Carr, CVHS. Top three schools: first, PHS; second, CVHS; and third, Orme.

Level 4, Pre-calculus and Calculus, individual honors (all from PHS): first, Evan Richards; second, Danny Huck; third, J.J. Campbell; fourth, Liang "Mars" Zhuo; and fifth, Stephanie Sara. Top three schools: first, PHS; second, Orme; and third, CVHS.

Team competition: Top three (all from PHS): first place, Don't Drink and Drive comprising Evan Richards, Stephanie Sara, Ian Trushell and Liang "Mars" Zhuo; second, Denominators comprising Jarrett Bean, Josh Heffner, Ainsley Lloyd and Sarah Wadsworth; and third, Dawg Lb. comprising J.J. Campbell, Brad Glenn and Mattie Vallely.

College Bowl: first, Orme School; second, PMHMS; and third, CVHS.

Overall Top 10 students: first, Evan Richards, PHS; second, Danny Huck, PHS; third, J.J. Campbell, PHS; fourth, Liang "Mars" Zhuo, PHS; fifth, Stephanie Sara, PHS; sixth, Josh Smith, PHS; seventh, Ian Trushell, PHS; eighth, Yuki Kaneda, Orme; ninth, Chung Yong Park, Orme; and tenth, Craig Rader, PHS.

All winning students and teams took home trophies.
