Prescott swimmers place high at ASU
A handful of Prescott area Masters Swimmers all placed at the recent Southwest Zone Short Course Championship Swim Meet held at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center at ASU.
The meet was attended by well-knowns and even world record holders, including Gary Hall Sr. and Ron Johnson. Teams from Nevada, California, Arizona and New Mexico attended with swimmers from 19 to 84 years of age. To seed all 264 participants, 12-17 heats per event was normal.
Prescott swimmers' results:
Ray Bellem (60-64 yr.) captured two firsts in the 200 and 50 breaststroke while still nursing a minor injury.
Sara Walker (25-29 yr.) won fourth place in the 200 freestyle.
Gene Fougner (45-49 yr.) placed fifth in 50 butterfly, sixth in 50 breaststroke, sixth in 100 breaststroke and seventh in the 100 freestyle.
Lou Silverstein (70-74 yr.) received third in 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke and first in the mile swim.
Brigid Bunch (35-40 yr.) was the big point winner of the group just missing the women's high point award by five points. She placed first in the 400 IM and 200 breaststroke; second in 100 breaststroke; third in 100 IM, 200 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly; and sixth in the 100 backstroke.
Masters Swimmers work out often with teams and often on their own but all are members through the National Masters Swimming Program.
