Is there any more renowned landmark in the Southwest than the Grand Canyon? Yet, many don't even know it is in Arizona. As my daughter said, "You can't say, 'I have seen the Grand Canyon,' until you've stepped into it and seen it from below the Rim." This is truer than it sounds since the average visit to the Canyon is a mere 15 minutes, according to Stewart Aitchison in "The Naturalist's Guide to Hiking the Grand Canyon." The Tonto Trail, running 100 miles along the Tonto Formation on the south side of the Colorado River, is a true classic hike and the single most significant route on which you can experience the Grand Canyon in all its immensity and grandeur.
