Sports in Brief: Cardinals sign receiver Bryant Mitchell to future contract

NFL

TEMPE — The Arizona Cardinals signed former CFL wide receiver Bryant Mitchell to a future contract Thursday.

Mitchell had 60 receptions for 867 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games last season for the Edmonton Eskimos. In 19 career games in three seasons with the Eskimos, the former Northwestern State player had 97 catches for 1,418 yards and six touchdowns.

Ohio State QB Martell signals he may transfer

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell may be looking to transfer.

Martell has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal, according to a person with access to the portal. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the database isn't public.

Martell listing his name with the NCAA means schools are now free to talk to him about a potential transfer.

Martell, who will be a third-year sophomore, sat behind record-smashing quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. last season. He seemed to be the heir apparent when Haskins left early for the NFL draft. But then Ohio State lured Georgia transfer Justin Fields to compete for the starting spot.

Fields was the No. 1 national recruit in the 2018 class.

Harbaugh hires Gattis away from Alabama to be Michigan's OC

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh bounced back from losing two assistants to rival Ohio State with what looks like a strong addition to his staff.

Harbaugh hired Josh Gattis away from Alabama to be his offensive coordinator after losing assistants Greg Mattison and Al Washington to the Buckeyes on consecutive days this week.

And, Harbaugh gave Gattis a title on Thursday no one had last year when he said playing-calling was a collaborative effort.

"The offense and passing games under Josh's direction have achieved at a very high level throughout his coaching career," Harbaugh said. "Josh will provide leadership to our offense while being a great mentor to our student-athletes and an outstanding addition to our coaching staff."

The 34-year-old Gattis was co-offensive coordinator last season for the Crimson Tide. Nick Saban has said Gattis is an outstanding recruiter with a promising future. Before going to Alabama, Gattis was Penn State's wide receivers coach and passing-game coordinator and led the program's offensive recruiting efforts the previous four seasons.
