Kids, adults can win costume contest prizes.

Downtown Prescott can be expected to be flooded with families in costume on Sunday, Oct. 28 for Yavapai CASA for Kids Foundation’s fifth annual Costumes for Kids 5K and Fun Run.

It’s actually going to be a true 5K this year as the course has been extended to make it so, said Yavapai CASA for Kids Foundation Public Relations Chair Jennifer Whittemore.

“We’ve added some mileage,” Whittemore said.

The event starts at 10 a.m. at courthouse plaza and, will also have booths with games for the kids and a costume contest with prizes for each category for children and adults. It’s free for children ages 16 and under as well as for foster families and $25 for all other runners and walkers.

While it’s the fifth year for the event, Yavapai CASA for Kids Foundation is a nonprofit that has been around for more than 15 years and supports kids in foster care providing for needs the state does not including playing sports, extra clothing and furniture. There are more than 300 foster kids in the Prescott area. The money that comes in from the Costumes for Kids 5K and Fun Run goes to the foundation’s cause, Whittemore said.

Last year’s event saw more than 100 runners and brought in around $6,400, she said. The hope is to match that or do better and while there haven’t been as many signups yet, most register on the day of the event, Whittemore said.

Anyone who comes is going to have a fun time supporting a worthy cause and she’s looking forward to another great year, Whittemore said.

“It’s for a great cause and it’s a lot of fun,” she said.
