The Prescott City Council members on Tuesday, Oct. 23, unanimously approved a ban on hand-held devices while driving.

The devices could include anything, such as cellphones or tablets, that can distract drivers.

The ban follows the lead of the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors, which approved a similar ban earlier this month. The county ban goes into effect Nov. 2.

The Prescott measure comes with a grace period until Jan. 1, 2019. If caught, violators would pay a $100 fine for the first offense; up to $250 for subsequent offenses in a 12-month period.

Devices that have been converted or enabled for hands-free use are allowed as such.
