Woody Hancock

Born in Fort Meade, Florida, on Feb. 19, 1946, Woody grew up working the family cattle ranch and orange groves until enrolling in Florida State University.

He was a man of many talents and had worked hanging wallpaper, as well as in antique restoration, truck driving, as a bank clerk, a restaurant manager and a pack-mule rider for Disneyland.

In 1976, Woody earned his barber license, followed by opening his first shop, in Mt. Dora, Florida. He later found his way to Arizona, living and working in the Phoenix area before finding his home in Prescott.

He opened Woody’s Barber Styling on Montezuma Street, which became Heads Up Barber Styling when combining talents with business partner and friend, Susan Christopher, until retiring in 2014.

Woody then headed out in his travel trailer, seeing all the places in the United States that he intended to. In 2016, Woody bought a home and property in Benson, Arizona, until going back to Florida to be with his sisters.

Woody passed away March 3, 2018, after a brief and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He fought his battle with grace, never complaining or wanting to be a burden to anyone. Always positive and thankful to everyone who helped him, a reflection of the true gentleman that he was.

Woody was predeceased by his parents, Woodrow and Maxine Russell Hancock, and is survived by his sisters — Sandra Mitchell and Karen Hancock — and his aunt Valda Robinson.

Woody touched the lives of many with his kindness. He enjoyed the personal service he provided and loved the friendships that evolved with his clients.

His generosity was limitless with the many charities he supported. Knowing Woody has made each of us a more compassionate and loving being. He will forever be in our hearts. Until we meet again, rest in peace, dear friend.

A celebration of life is being planned for a later date.
