Workshop presenters, counselors and other volunteers are sought for the Women’s Empowerment Breakthrough (WEB) conference, set for Friday through Sunday, April 13-15.
The annual conference — a project of The Launch Pad Teen Center — is a three-day retreat in the mountains just outside Prescott.
The event is intended for young women, ages 12-18, and offers educational workshops on everything from nutrition and chocolate making to comprehensive sex-ed and understanding pop music. Each year, anywhere from 40 to 70 girls attend the conference.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Grit” and will focuses on how to fail without being defeated and how to move ahead after failing, the conference said in its press release.
Girls typically respond to failure differently than boys, according to the group’s statement. Girls tend to view failure as an indication of a lack of ability, rather than a correctable problem and a learning experience.
Girls are also likely to have high expectations of themselves, to be perfect, rather than to be brave.
This year’s WEB conference aims to instill a culture of grit and bravery with the girls who attend.
Any who would like to present a workshop at the conference will need to commit to 1.5 or 3 hours on Saturday, April 14.
A description of the workshop topic and preferred time to present must be provided to the Web Conference no later than April 7.
Volunteer counselors are also needed, to be paired with another adult, to take charge of about 10 girls. For counselors, the time commitment will be three days and nights, Friday, April 28, through Sunday, April 30, as well as an additional night of counselor training (date yet to be determined).
Those interested in volunteering as a counselor are will need to submit the completed counselor application no later than April 1.
Counselors and workshop presenter positions are filling quickly, so those who wish to participate should submit an application early.
Other volunteer opportunities at the Web conference include helping in the kitchen, providing mental health services and a range of support staff.
Please pass along to any who might be interested in volunteering at the conference the brochure, registration packet, call for presenters and counselor application, which is available at the URL below.
