John A. Herberg

Colonel John A. “Jack” Herberg, 95, a long-time resident of Prescott, Arizona, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born April 1922, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to Milton and Violetta Herberg.

Jack found his soul mate and partner for life at the age of 25 when he married Vangeline Alameda in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Suisun, California, on Nov. 30, 1947.

Jack was a career Air Force officer and pilot in World War II, flying over 69 supply missions in the China-Burma-India Hump theater and the Berlin Airlift. His military travels expanded the world and he proudly served with distinction for 30 years, with 9,300 flight hours, and retiring from military service as the Base Commander of Homestead AFB, Florida, in 1972. A veteran of WWII, he earned several medals, including the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and WWII Valor Medal.

Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vangie; his parents; and his revered Uncle Earl.

Jack was a wonderful, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He is survived by his children, Darby, James and Jeanne; grandchildren, Clayton, Lisa and Cassie; great-grandchild, Laila; siblings, George, Ruth, Bill and Donna; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Jack loved fishing and hunting, playing the piano, classical music, especially Beethoven. He was a lifelong student of history and mathematics, and he enjoyed tinkering with cars. He gave from his heart, was unflagging in his generosity, and was always there when we needed him. He will be deeply missed.

Interment was at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Boulder City, Nevada.
