Letter: Put in spikes

Editor:

Rather than combating the problem of wrong-way freeway drivers by spending millions to warn drivers of the impending danger, would it not be more practical and effective to direct efforts towards preventing wrong-way drivers from entering the freeway? This could be accomplished by installing the type of retractable spikes commonly used in parking lot exit lanes to prevent unauthorized entry into the lot. Placing this type mechanism at the top of every exit ramp on the freeway would puncture the tires of any errant and usually impaired driver and likely disable, in rapid fashion, the forward motion of the wrong-way driver.
