A 46-year-old man suffered injuries after he fell asleep at the wheel and rolled his vehicle on Highway 89 at Granite Dells in Prescott early Sunday morning.

At approximately 5 a.m., two Prescott Fire Department engines and a battalion chief responded to reports of the single rollover, finding a white sedan on its side with its single occupant already out of the vehicle.

Initial reports from bystanders stated the driver crawled out of the vehicle under his own power, but had been in and out of consciousness afterwards, according to PFD spokesperson E. Conrad Jackson.

The man was transported to Yavapai Regional Medical Center for further evaluation.

“Considering the substantial damage to the vehicle, it should be noted that the driver’s use of a seatbelt likely saved him from receiving more significant injuries,” Jackson said in a press release.

Traffic flow through Granite Dells was reduced to a single lane for more than an hour as emergency personnel cleared the scene.
