Thirty-six seventh and eighth grade students participated in the Prescott Mile High Middle School Scripps Spelling Bee held on Thursday, Dec. 13 after winning their classroom spelling bees as qualifiers. Principal Andy Binder was the pronouncer, and Michelle Hoop, Molly Littrell, and Marlene Sullivan were the judges for the event.
The first place winner was eighth-grader Ethan Brinkerhoff with the word “chivalrous.” As the winner, he will go on to participate in the Yavapai County Spelling Bee. Ethan placed third in last year’s PMHMS spelling bee as a 7th grader. The second place winner, eighth-grader Andrea Parks, earned her spot with the word “espionage.” And eighth-grader Riley Holmes finished in third place by correctly spelling “bronchitis.”
The school spelling bee coordinator, 7th grade language arts teacher Summer Ammons, would like to thank all of the participants; “They all worked incredibly hard and their passion for education shined on stage just as they did.”
