Aug. 7 was Purple Heart Day and it was celebrated at the Prescott VA with awarding of certificates to two World War II veterans currently at the care facility.

Ron Johnson, a Cordes Lakes resident, managed to join the military at an early age. He was raised in an orphanage and was able to sign up for the Navy.

Johnson was a gunner and stated that he was “dumped” in the ocean several times when the returning aircraft was unable to stop in time on the deck of the ship.

Benny Enriquez is also currently at the facility, so I’m sure the stories go back and forth between these two.

With the Purple Heart proclamation, it was a perfect day for Barbara Oemcke, Medical Care Center director, and Lisa Martin, associate director, to present the certificates to these two World War II heroes. For those unaware, the Purple Heart is awarded to those who have been injured in combat, so not every veteran is eligible for this honor.
