Struggling to hold on to the football in a difficult six-point loss to Moon Valley Sept. 15 at home, Prescott bounced back in its 4A Grand Canyon Region opener Friday night, defeating Lee Williams, 21-6, in Kingman.
With the win, the Badgers upped their record to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Grand Canyon. The Volunteers dropped to 3-2 and 0-2.
Prescott quarterback Austin Clark threw two touchdown passes to wideout John Chaffeur, including one on a screen and the other on a deep ball. Tailback Ryan Greene also scored a TD, and “ran real hard,” Prescott coach Mike Gilpin said.
The Badgers trailed 6-0 early, but carried a narrow 7-6 lead into halftime. Prescott would ultimately score 21 unanswered points in what Gilpin called a “weird game” filled with penalties.
“I’m just proud our kids kept their composure, rallied and finished it off,” Gilpin added about the victory.
Defensively, Prescott defensive back Hunter Kronberg hauled in a key fourth-quarter interception and linebacker Garrett Fenderson registered an important sack, Gilpin said.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) will release its first power-point rankings of the 2017 season on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Only the Top 16 teams, including eight region champions and eight at-large teams based on ranking, earn invitations to the 4A State Tournament, which begins Nov. 3.
Prescott continues on in Grand Canyon play when it visits Mohave at 7 p.m., Sept. 29, in Bullhead City.
Lee Williams travels to Coconino Sept. 29, for a 7 p.m. region tilt at Cromer Stadium in Flagstaff.
