William Thomas Barringer

William Thomas Barringer, or Bill to all who knew him, was born on Feb. 13, 1928, in Cottonwood, Arizona, the son of Cliff and Mary Barringer. One of six children, Bill grew up in Cottonwood, an Arizona native, living most of his life locally.

After school, Bill joined the Army, where he was stationed in Alaska. Once he returned home, he met and married his wife, Sally, in 1951. A short time later, Bill moved his family to Prescott and began working at the Petersen Bunker Sawmill as a logger.

Bill became a part-time firefighter for the Central Yavapai Fire District, worked for Hamptons ambulance company, and volunteered for Search and Rescue. After 20 years as a firefighter, and a career as a logger, he finally retired in 1990. Bill continued his commitment to the community by serving on the CYFD pension board for many years.

In his free time, Bill enjoyed traveling with Sally, and hunting and fishing in Arizona’s outdoors. Bill also enjoyed tending to his garden during the summer months, and always made sure the birds got fed. You could find him in the shop with some project he took on, find him playing solitaire, or visiting with one of his many regular friends, family, or neighbors who often stopped by to visit.

Bill took pride in his family, enjoyed many friends and was always in good company. He took the time to talk with anybody and everybody. He liked to share his knowledge and experiences, give his opinions and allow people to see life with another perspective. You couldn’t walk away without a smile or a positive thought, a trait unique to him.

Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, Sally Barringer; three children, Bill (Debbie), Guy of Dewey, Arizona, and Mickey (Jim) of Fulton, Missouri; his sister, Betty of Prescott Valley; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother and father Cliff and Mary; brothers Bob and Dude; and sisters Dessie and Nessie.

Bill leaves behind a large family, and several friends who will miss him dearly, but always remember the good man he was.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 16, 2017, at 5 p.m., at Sunrise Funeral home in Prescott Valley. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at 10 a.m., at Sunrise Funeral Home and a graveside service will follow at Heritage Memory Park in Dewey, Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill’s name to the Wildland Firefighters Foundation or the Prescott Firefighters Charities.
