As the school year officially comes to a close, the days are suddenly warmer and longer as we welcome summer … and our community looks forward to travel and time to reconnect with friends and family. However, summer to the children of Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters is often experienced differently. The structure and predictability of the school year has faded, and the vulnerable children of our community are left facing months of unstructured time with limited opportunity.
As the number of single parent households grows — struggling to make ends meet — the decision of what to buy at the grocery store and payment of an electric bill far outweighs the options of a trip cross country to visit a long loved relative or even enrollment in a fun summer camp. Summertime often produces increased stress for our families — it is a financial disruption in their lives with older siblings relegated to watching younger ones while their parent works, or displacement to an out of town relative who can provide the necessary child care.
Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to thank our many community partners who create memorable opportunities for our Little Brothers and Little Sisters during this break from the school year: Arizona Dreams Gymnastics, Plaza Bowl, Antelope Lanes, Boys & Girls Club, Boys to Men, Launch Pad, Clayote Studios, English Garden Tea Room, Freedom Station, Frozen Frannie’s, Full Swing Sports Center, Heritage Park Zoo, Jarz of Clay, John Hancock Barbershop, Manzanita Outfitters, Phippen Museum, The World’s Oldest Rodeo, Planet Fitness, Prescott Golf & Country Club, Yavapai College (swimming pool), James Family Prescott YMCA, Bearizona, Blazin’ M Ranch, Sedona Cold Stone Creamery, Clarkdale Copper Art Museum, Out of Africa, Camp Verde’s Predator Zipline, Sedona Heritage Museum, Slide Rock State Park, and Shake, Rattle and Bowl at Cliff Castle Casino.
Because of you, our youth will have a summer filled with new experiences that will have a positive, lifelong impact. Thank you for providing joy to our Littles — a memory that summer should bring to all children!
