Letter: Let’s be civil

I do not know Bob Shaw, who recently wrote such a vitriolic letter to the editor, nor do I personally know any of the four editors—who, by the way, appear to be coming from totally different political and ideological viewpoints. My impression, though, is that they are all fine, honorable men, even when I may not agree with a particular viewpoint they express on a particular subject. They, like all of us, are entitled to hold, and express their own views. Mr. Shaw’s is where I draw the line.

It doesn’t MATTER whether or not we agree or disagree with a person or an idea, we still need to keep it civil! As with a previous earlier negative diatribe against Tim Wiederaenders, this type of personal attack and name calling is absolutely unacceptable, in a civilized society!

Loose accusations, rude generalizations, and even name calling? You’ve got to be kidding!

You can disagree, without being disagreeable.

For the record, I chose not to vote for either candidate for president, as I felt many others were better qualified. That doesn’t change anything; uncivil discourse accomplishes nothing, except the further degradation of our society.

Free speech can be lost, when it is repeatedly misused to abuse others. For letters to the editor, let alone Rants & Raves, to be published in our hometown paper is a PRIVILEGE, not a right.

And by the way, I’ve subscribed to the Courier for over 50 years, and most of the time I think you do a FINE job! Way to go, gentleman; keep up the good work, and ignore the Grinches!
