Local Sports in Brief: 5 Roughrider soccer players named to All-West Team

The 2017 United Soccer Coaches Junior College Division One Men’s All-West Team was announced Wednesday, with five players from the Yavapai College men’s soccer team receiving honors. Freshman attackers Jose Perez Flores and William Baynham, sophomore defender Ricardo Nunez-Arellano, sophomore midfielder Johnny Ramirez and freshman goalkeeper Tyler Trump were awarded. The Roughriders claimed an ACCAC, region and district title this season, advancing to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament for the 21st time in program history, making it all the way to the final four before losing 3-2 in overtime to Tyler Junior College. Yavapai (23-3-3) broke a 24-year-old national scoring record with 145 goals this season.

Information sought in Elk poaching near Flagstaff, $1,500 reward offered

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is investigating the poaching of a bull elk, which occurred the evening of Dec. 3 near Picture Canyon in Flagstaff. The bull was found north of State Route 66 off Rain Valley Road. The elk was shot and left to waste in Game Management Unit 11M, where no elk season was going on at the time. Investigation officers believe the elk was shot from a vehicle on Rain Valley Road. Anyone with information about the case are encouraged to call the department’s Operation Game Thief Hotline at 800-352-0700. A reward of up to $1,500 is being offered in this case for information leading to the arrest of the violators.

Waterfowl camp for young hunters set for Jan. 6-7

Young hunters interested in learning everything there is to know about waterfowl hunting are invited to attend the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s annual Pintail Slough Junior Waterfowl Camp on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 6 and 7, at Havasu National Wildlife Refuge. The camp is limited to 18 hunters between the ages of 12 and 17, each of which must be accompanied by an adult. No prior experience is necessary. All young hunters will learn how to identify, hunt and clean waterfowl before putting those skills to use in the Pintail Slough duck blinds. A refundable $40 registration fee is required, and all participants will be chosen through a random draw and will be notified by email or phone. The deadline to register is Friday, Dec. 22.

Facebook, ESPN to broadcast NAZ Suns games this season

The NBA Gatorade League announced Friday, Nov. 3, that two Northern Arizona Suns games will be broadcast on ESPNU this season, and the other 48 games will air on Facebook Live. The Suns were on national television Nov. 30 against the Greensboro Swarm, and are set to be part of ESPN’s coverage at the NBA G League Showcase in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, when they face the Canton Charge at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12.
