Evelyn Groff

Evelyn Groff of Prescott, Arizona, died on April 21, 2017. She passed peacefully in her sleep, attended by her husband.

She leaves behind a grieving family consisting of Peter, her husband of 60 years; six children, Steven (Natalie) of Chandler, Joe (Susie) of Phoenix, John of Tucson, Mary Stoffel (Craig) of Phoenix, Teresa Brittain (Jon) of Glendale, Tom (Julianne) of Webster, New York; and 16 grandchildren. A son, David preceded her in death.

She has two brothers, Jerome Hronek of Prescott and Vern Hronek of Pocahontas, Iowa. A sister, Irene, preceded her in death.

She and her husband and family came to Prescott in 1974 after Peter’s retirement as a Navy Pilot. Their children all graduated from Prescott High School and all attended Arizona colleges and Embry-Riddle. Evelyn was active in many different volunteer organizations, first at Sharlot Hall and then as a Hospital Pink Lady. For many years, she was an active member of the Prescott Fine Arts and the Prescott Art Docents.

She and Peter were members of Sacred Heart Church. They were for many years Eucharistic Ministers and also teen leaders in the religious education program. Evelyn also worked in the R.E. office. She was an active Claret member.

She also was a member of the Chapter Y PEO and served a term as president and contributed to all women’s functions. Her hobbies included bridge, she was an avid reader, loved the piano, always enjoyed gardening, and entertaining, and when her health permitted, loved walking for miles.

Her special love, of course, was gathering the family together for holidays or special occasions.

Evelyn was born in Pocahontas, Iowa, on June 2, 1935, to Wesley and Mary Hronek. She attended grade and high school in Pocahontas and later studied at the University of Iowa. She and Peter were married in 1957 and lived their early married life moving from Naval base to Naval base, which she enjoyed.

Visitation, Wednesday, April 26, 2017, 4 to 7 p.m. Rosary at 7 p.m. at Ruffner-Wakelin Funeral home, 303 S. Cortez, Prescott. Mass of Christian Burial, Thursday April 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 11 a.m. 150 Fleury St., Prescott, Arizona.

Ruffner-Wakelin Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted the family in the arrangements.
