PRESCOTT VALLEY - Five Chino Valley High wrestlers are guaranteed to medal today, Feb. 13, after advancing to the semifinals of their respective weight classes in the opening rounds of the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Division III State Tournament.
At Prescott Valley Event Center, 120-pounder JC Mortensen, 126-pounder Kendall Foster, 145-pounder Nic Dalcerro, 160-pounder Gary Medevielle and 170-pounder Spencer Coffin all reached the semis for the Cougars, putting them in second place in the team standings.
Bradshaw Mountain 160-pound junior Jacob Kidd may have registered the upset of the day for the locals, though, defeating the top seed in his weight class in the first round and later winning in the winners' bracket quarterfinals. Kidd, too, is guaranteed to medal.
AIA's D-III and D-IV tournaments will resume with session two at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 13, and conclude with the medal rounds at 4 p.m.
Admission is $15 per adult, $13 per senior/military member, and $5 per student for an all-day pass. Children ages 5 and younger get in free.
What follows are the results of the opening-round matches for Chino Valley, Bradshaw Mountain and Mayer's state-qualifying wrestlers.
106 pounds: Chase Middleton (24-12 record after first round of consolation bracket), freshman - The unseeded Middleton was pinned by Page sophomore Kamron Whitewater in 1 minute and 37 seconds in the opening round Friday morning, Feb. 12.
Middleton rebounded in the consolations, pinning Shadow Ridge's Destiny Cazares in 2:58. Today, Middleton will face South Mountain sophomore Sergio Ayala. He needs two more wins to reach the medal rounds.
120: JC Mortensen (34-6 through winners' bracket quarterfinals), freshman - The fourth-seeded Mortensen, a section champion, pinned Flowing Wells junior Roberto Robles in 2 minutes flat. In the winners' bracket quarterfinals, Mortensen pinned Camelback sophomore Davon Gillespe in 4:49. Today, Mortensen will face top-seeded Safford freshman Bryon Finch in the semifinals.
126: Kendall Foster (46-1 through winners' bracket quarters), senior - The No. 1-seeded Foster, a section champ, pinned Palo Verde senior Alfredo Cielo Jr. in the opening round. Foster then defeated Lee Williams' Nic Verville, 4-1, in the winners' bracket quarters. Today, Foster will battle San Luis junior Carlos Monteon in the semifinals.
145: Nic Dalcerro (33-10 through winners' bracket quarters), senior - The unseeded Dalcerro defeated fourth-seeded Cortez sophomore Camilo Dela Torre-Hern, 21-6. Dalcerro subsequently pinned Combs' Dalton Lupton in 3:35 in the quarterfinals. Today, Dalcerro takes on unbeaten top-seeded Safford freshman Dawon Andrews in the semis.
160: Gary Medevielle (53-3 through the winners' bracket quarters), senior - The second-seeded Medevielle, a back-to-back section champion, pinned Buckeye senior Nicholas Stevens in 4:42 in the opening round. Medevielle then pinned Empire senior Austin Henry in 3:54 in the winners' bracket quarterfinals. Today, Medevielle will face third-seeded senior Rafael Paredes in the semis.
170: Spencer Coffin (51-2 through the winners' bracket quarterfinals), senior - The second-seeded Coffin, another back-to-back section titlist, pinned Shadow Ridge senior John Kantner in 59 seconds in the opening round. Coffin then defeated Walden Grove junior Lance Killgore, 12-2, in the winners' bracket quarterfinals. Today, Coffin will battle third-seeded Williams Field junior Zane McKinney in the semis.
182: David Lemcke (31-9 after first round of consolation bracket), senior - The unseeded Lemcke succumbed to Bradshaw Mountain's Dakota Howard, 4-3, in the opening round. Lemcke bounced back in the consolation bracket, though, beating Flowing Wells senior Marcos Alvarado, 8-1. Today, Lemcke will face Camelback senior Scott Blamer to try and keep his medal hopes alive.
195: Marcus Holmberg (39-15 after first round of consolation bracket), junior - The unseeded Holmberg won by forfeit over fourth-seeded Yuma junior Adrian Madrid in the opening round. In the winners' bracket quarterfinals, Holmberg narrowly lost to Cesar Chavez's Davon Galindo, 5-3, dropping him into the consolation bracket. Today, Holberg will meet Tempe senior Aaron Epstein in the second round of the consolations.
220: Juan Sanchez (44-15 after first round of consolations), senior - The unseeded Sanchez was pinned in 5:04 by top-seeded Show Low junior Jaisen Brown in the opening round. Sanchez moved on in the consolation bracket to defeat Yuma senior David Macias, 10-3. Today, Sanchez will meet Amphitheater junior David Gonzales in the second round of the consolations.
285: Chris Gomez (35-15 after first round of consolations), senior - The unseeded Gomez defeated Flagstaff junior Daniel Salazar, 10-5, in the opening round. Gomez was subsequently pinned by fourth-seeded Apache Junction senior Michael Uehling in 3:36, dropping him into the consolation bracket. Today, Gomez will face Show Low junior Jose Escamilla in the second round of the consolations.
160: Jacob Kidd (36-13 record through the winners' bracket quarterfinals), junior - The unseeded Kidd notched a big upset on Friday, edging No. 1-seeded San Luis senior Lisandro Soto, 6-4, in the opening round. Kidd moved on to dominate Safford's George Manyfield in a 16-1 victory in the winners' bracket quarterfinals. Today, Kidd will take on fourth-seeded junior Jesus Zamorano of Coolidge in the semis.
170: Daniel Medevielle (29-17 final record), sophomore - The unseeded Medevielle was pinned by top-seeded Moon Valley senior Karl Halstead in 3:21 in the opening round. Medevielle subsequently lost, 5-2, to Flowing Wells senior Daniel Ramirez in the consolation bracket and was eliminated from the tournament.
182: Dakota Howard (23-9 through first round of consolations), senior - The unseeded Howard edged Chino Valley senior David Lemcke, 4-3, in the opening round. Howard was pinned by third-seeded Show Low junior Diego Huerta in 5:14 in the winners' bracket quarterfinals, dropping him into the consolation bracket. Today, Howard meets Shadow Ridge's Justin Hughes in hopes of keeping his medal chances alive.
152: Caleb Wallace (23-13 final record), junior - The unseeded Wallace was pinned by No. 1-seeded Snowflake senior Wacey Wood in 48 seconds in the opening round. Wallace was subsequently eliminated from the tournament by Window Rock sophomore Ethan Kaye, who beat him, 20-12, in the consolation bracket.
170: Charles Boothe (11-20 final record), junior - The unseeded Boothe was pinned by San Tan Foothills sophomore Filippo Ravedoni in 24 seconds in the opening round. Boothe was subsequently eliminated from the tournament by Bisbee's Christian Ballesteros, who pinned him in 1:14, in the consolation bracket.
195: Ryan Fleshner (15-13 after the first round of consolations), senior - The unseeded Fleshner was pinned by No. 2-seeded Winslow sophomore Ahli Foster in 1:05. However, Fleshner won by forfeit over San Tan Foothills junior Hayden Michalak in the consolation bracket. Today, Fleshner will face Santa Cruz Valley's Hector Hermosillo in the second round of the consolations.
220: Zebediah Leonard (24-13 after the first round of consolations), sophomore - The unseeded Leonard was pinned by Bisbee junior Rigoberto Regalado in the first round. But Leonard responded in the consolation bracket, pinning Valley Christian's Brad Lecjar in 1:27 to stay alive in the tournament. Today, Leonard will face Winslow's Quentin Begody in the second round of the consolations.
